In 2006, Mark Hathaway (who ran the first fan-operated Franz Ferdinand website) was contacted by the band to start up an old-school fan club, complete with magazines, exclusives, a membership card, etc. Mark needed someone to handle the graphic design, and asked me to do it. I agreed (obviously!) and the two of us basically ran the fan club together until he passed away in 2010. I took point on issue #6, and then designed the cover for issue #7. The fan club sadly disbanded after that.
During my time as graphic designer for the fan club, I designed seven magazine covers, artwork for one 7″ single, a membership card, a flyer, took photos of the band when I was at their shows, and put together numerous layouts for the magazines. It was a lot of work, but it was so much fun and was the highlight of my graphic design “career.” Befriending Mark was wonderful, and I miss him so much. The band was also so awesome to work with, and I’m still in touch with them. I haven’t missed a show of theirs in Minnesota yet!
